Hi! I received a Ubox for review on my channel and have a question regarding performance on Linux. I’m not a Windows guy, so I wanted to do most of the review in Linux… but, I ran into a slight issue.
In Linux, power draw is a bit lower and thus the system is more silent when idle. That’s a big plus! However, it is also performing less… or at least the GPU is performing less. I tried it both in OpenMandriva, Arch and Bazzite, all perform more or less the same. FPS in games in generally 20-30% higher in Windows than it is in Linux, which is… not what I’m used to see.
I tried serveral tools like LACT, gamemode and RyzenAdj but they have no impact on gaming performance at all.
I noticed that Furmark in the basic 10s 1080p test did around 12 FPS in Windows, and 8 FPS in Linux. That’s a way too big difference in my opinion.
Using AMD’s “pro” drivers, in Arch running Furmark through ‘progl’, I suddenly reached 13 FPS!
The first game I tried in Steam had the same effect. From 60’ish to 90+! That same game runs at 75-80 FPS in Windows!
However, this does not work for Vulkan games, which are… most of them. Running those through vk_pro does not povide this boost. Doom Eternal runs at 45’ish FPS while it’s closer to 60 in Windows.
Does anyone here know a solution to bring Linux gaming up to the same level as Windows on the Ryzen 5 6600H / Radeon 660M that’s in here?
