Creating this topic for consideration of the idea of selling Laptops/PC with preinstalled Linux, or at least marketing as “Linux ready”. Current trends show how many users run away from Windows to Linux. Gaming on Linux also has better performance, recently SteamOS game cube being sold too.
I wrote some ideas why I “Like Linux” here:
But I think this deserves a separate topic. Maybe people would add/support this, or share, offer more ideas related to it. Or facts about current trends how people are switching to Linux. And with some time it will come to reality.
I am writing from Chuwi MiniBook X, while runing Pop OS. (It has nice Rust based Cosmic desktop environment and has abandoned usual GRUB boot manager which is also great for no problem upgrading, I also can solve any dual boot problems when using rEFInd too if it were needed).
I appreciate Chuwi company a lot, and I wanted to point out some noticeable trends in the world as I see Chuwi somehow markets “Windows 11 with Copilot”. Users are running away from Windows. One of the reasons are showing that AI Copilot spyware down their throats without asking - it made even notepad vulnerable to hacking (true, you can search it). Craziest moments are how it makes screenshots of your desktop every few seconds with “windows recall”.
Even windows themselves created Linux - CBL-Mariner (now officially named Azure Linux): This is an actual Linux distribution created by Microsoft. As they also making some promises like “hey we have plans to fix windows, please don’t run away”.
Many developers chose “simplicity (with no privacy)” by choosing Apple Mac computers for development and work - and it is also possible to achieve same smoothness and easy management with Linux (where even privacy exists, all user data not being stolen so easily).
Windows dominated just because it was main option for Gaming, but now SteamOS by Valve is so on the rise, and SteamOS Gaming cube also released recently. People go to Linux to gain like 10% or more performance on gaming.
Windows are bloated with spyware, ads, telemetry, and forced updates that crash your system, while having lots of vulnerabilities.
By the way, last week I also installed Debian on Termux on my foldable Honor Magic V5 phone - works great, but still big screen on MiniBook X and physical keyboard is great, and it is easy to write when I hold LAPTOP on my lap (which is not achievable with any tablet pc with attachable keyboard).
Also some manufacturers like Lenovo and DELL started selling laptops with preinstalled Linux. All because of how much people DISLIKE windows, and how bad it is, how much they hate Copilot. Companies can’t even use windows because their policies demand “privacy” and windows can’t offer anything like that. Like doctors for example they have to protect clients privacy and data - with windows they can’t do that. Linux can. (Apple can’t but it is not so obvious for many).
Also a big plus - Companies can sell hardware for cheaper when there is no windows preinstalled on it!
So why am I writing all this? In hopes that CHUWI would start selling at least some laptops with **preinstalled Linux (**Pop OS for example as seen below - looks very convenient and beautiful, or some other Linux os that reminds more of windows interface like Mint, or Ubuntu. Althrough I find Pop OS best for many years).
Notice that even “Greatest technician that ever lived” on youtube also uses same Chuwi MiniBook X.. we come to buy Chuwi because we understand choice that we are making, and we understand why Linux is so useful and convenient and not so toxic as windows.
I could guess that maybe Chuwi would gain even much more popularity if it were selling laptops with preinstalled Linux like Dell and Lenovo does now…
I mean for some “official work” people use Apple devices when they dont care about privacy or Windows devices when they dont care about privacy. But if you want to have “Your computer” it is vital to have a Linux operating system that does not send a copy of all your data to the cloud all the time with torrent networks pretending it is distributing updates.
Also on Linux there are no Viruses like on Windows. If you would choose to ignore the current trends like this:
According to StatCounter’s tracking data, Windows desktop market share fell below 60% for the first time, dropping down to roughly 56.5%. To put that into perspective, Windows historically hovered securely between 70% and 80% for over a decade. Because Microsoft states there are roughly 1.4 to 1.6 billion active Windows devices worldwide, even a single percentage point drop represents 14 to 16 million devices shifting away from the Windows ecosystem.
Then at least I ask to, PLEASE make your devices or at least some COMPATIBLE with Linux from the start fully. Put it to marketing like with stickers “Linux ready” - it will drive your sales up too.
These are just some of the reasons off the top of my head.. but I think clients who buy Chuwi are the same who uses Linux. And users who uses windows, they dont even know brand names.. they just go to store and ask for a pc. It is also not hard to make system Dual boot too for safer option - it would cost almost nothing, but would also be a great marketing advantage. And you could even make some simple one click software which would just format linux partitions as “local hard drive” if user does not want it. so there would be no disadvantages. Linux is free btw.
So have a nice day.
