Chuwi MiniBook X (Intel U300) – Ubuntu 26.04 permanent screen artifacts / lines unless nomodeset is used

Hi everyone,

I am facing a persistent issue with the built-in display on my Chuwi MiniBook X (Intel Processor U300) running Ubuntu 26.04.

The Problem:

  • On a normal boot, the screen immediately turns into vertical/horizontal colorful lines/artifacts and doesn’t load the desktop correctly. It happens every time, not randomly.
  • If I boot with nomodeset, the screen works fine and there are no artifacts, but the maximum resolution is locked to 1024x768 (fallback VESA driver).

What I’ve tried so far:

  1. Added i915.enable_psr=0 i915.enable_dc=0 intel_idle.max_cstate=2

    to GRUB.

  2. Created /etc/modprobe.d/i915.conf with options i915 enable_psr=0 enable_fbc=0 enable_dc=0 modeset=1 and updated both grub and initramfs.

  3. Unfortunately, as soon as I remove nomodeset, the screen goes straight back to artifacts/lines.

Since nomodeset works,

the hardware/panel is physically fine. It seems like a regression or specific DSI panel timing issue in the newer kernel on Ubuntu 26.04.

I am attaching a photo of the artifacts and a screenshot of my current system specifications. Any help with getting full resolution without the artifacts would be highly appreciated!

This is not isolated to one OS. The exact same behavior (permanent artifacts) occurs on Ubuntu 26.04, Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, and Fedora KDE. It happens regardless of the desktop environment (GNOME or KDE).

Same here with the N100. Especially with Kubuntu 24.04 and sometimes with 26.04.

Did you try 26.10? With Kernel 7.3 it is very recent.

Cheers, Jaap
