HI, I have a problem with screen brightness under Windows 11. On minimal settings it is already quite bright. You can adjust it even further, but it mainly just washes out colors. Minimal settings while tolerable for day use make it totally unusable during night.
I’ve checked screen under Ubuntu 24.04 LTS and there screen works just fine. You can darken it to barely visible or go to very bright if you wish.
I assume it is a driver issue, or maybe just some setting to adjust minimal brightness level. What can be done to fix this behavior?
i’m both on windows and linux [gnome wayland] and the behavior is the same like in windows.
in windows there is an intel graphics display app, where you can set the color brightness, but it does not help a lot.
i’m curious why on ubuntu the brightness works at a low level. At the login screen, can you check the cogwheel which protocol you’re using - wayland or x11?
I’ve only used live ubuntu version booted from pendrive. Brightness works as I said without problems. Since it is live version, it doesn’t have a login screen, but I’ve checked it uses X11. In this live versions there are some problems which discourage me from installing it though:
fractional scaling seems to work, by it doesn’t. It leaves some artefact on screen and you don’t click on windows you think you click, but on unscaled version… keyboard navigation works correctly though.
Bluetooth works properly, but wifi is not detected at all.
yeah I’m not a fan of Ubuntu. It did not work for me. Check my post on the linux I installed. Everything works except tablet mode switch. If you want fractional scaling work, you need to install KDE Plasma desktop. Unfortunately the brightness issue is still the same like in windows.
Thanks for feedback ed61. I personally love Ubuntu/Debian and use them a lot on different machines without issues - though mostly on servers. I assume I would probably make wifi work eventually and fractional scaling is not that big issue, as I prefer to use 100% and just increased text from accessibility features. Scaling just eats up all the extra resolution you have here. I just don’t have time to play with it and expect products I buy to just work. The reason I checked with Ubuntu was just to make sure it’s not a hardware issue and now I know it is not. Btw, BIOS also has this high brightness by default.
Anyway, does anyone at Chuwi read this? I would really appreciate a fix for Windows. What I might add is that in Ubuntu default brightness level (which looks like the same brightness level as in Windows) starts at around 25-30%, so you can go down from there. On Windows it’s already on minimal level and you cannot make it any darker.
hey, in windows it is just it being trash. Its not just Chuwi, but many other laptops have also reported brightnes stops working after updating. Something with display driver or what they say at least.
Linux is similiar, but it was a bug in the kernal, and it was fixed after a day or two and now workes fine. Just need to update the kernel and reboot and should fix everything.
Hi @aqua_cat I believe you mix up two different issues. While it is quite possible that updates can break down controls and make it stop working, my issue is something different. It “works” in terms of reacting on controls, it just does it in non satisfying way, at least for me. It’s just too bright even on minimal level.
Since Chuwi doesn’t seem to be providing dedicated drivers for this display (LQ135P1JX51) you are on your own. There are some utilities for Surface 3 laptop that seems to use the same display panel, but I didn’t have time to check it. Instead, I’ve found a different workaround: you can adjust default brightness by making your own color profile. It is not a perfect solution, but at least makes it usable and doesn’t burn my eyes
