Minibook X N100 - anyone tried ChromeOS Brunch? issues with linux kernel 6.6.x?

I’ve read many good things about the Minibook X N100. But also a lot of challenges to get Linux working correctly. Fedora 40 seems to be best distro.

For me Fedora 40 is a bit bloated. Can’t stand the daily/weekly updates of 1Gb.

I’d prefer to use ChromeOS Flex, which you can call a Linux derivative having a different desktop. Updates are biweekly using an immutable safe A/B partition scheme.

Unfortunately Flex uses an old kernel 5.15 which will create a lot of problems on the minibook e.g. screen, wifi, BT etc.

However there is a ChromeOS derivative github project called Brunch. It’s latest version r125 can run kernel 6.6.30.
I am running Brunch as my daily driver on my windows laptop, which can also boot linux and windows.

I am considering to buy the minibook to have a lighter laptop, if you are willing to do this experiment for me.

Some questions that I have.

  1. Has anyone tried to install Brunch in addition to Linux or want to test if brunch will work as a 3rd boot item?

With the github linuxloops project, you can easily install Brunch with one script command into a linux image file instead of a disk partition. Only the grub boot menu item you need to add by hand, but this is well documented in the Brunch github readme file.

  1. can someone confirm that kernel 6.6.30 does not have screen [tearing] or wifi issues?

I heard of bluetooth issues, which can be resolved by making symlinks to 2 firmware files.
ChromeOS settings has capability to change screen orientation.

  1. Are there more issues to mention with 6.6.30 except for tablet mode/accelerometer, as I am only interested in using the minibook as a laptop with a touchscreen?

Hi, just today I tested ChromeOS with Nissa image. It was pain in the ass to build the image cause it was the first time for me but I did it and chromeos was installed but I couldnt pass the setup screen since the wifi didn’t work?
I’m not sure if it’s the right image I used… someone with more experience should try

thanks for the effort. i think you tried Flex and not Brunch.

i bought the freebook and i’m running chrome os brunch now.

I used this method How to install ChromeOS (Google Play) on Intel PC/Laptop (youtube.com)

can you help me out with the setup?

sure, just go to the source and follow the instructions.

Choose the 3rd option [dual boot]. You also have to choose from which OS you will install - Windows or Linux.

No need to prepare usb drive or make a extra partition. All is installed on an image file. You need to have minimum 20GB free space available to try.

Everything is explained, just follow the instructions.
