Problem with usb device

when I insert the external USB drive into the USB port and start transferring a lot of data, an error message appears end the external device cannot be seen for a few seconds. I sometimes have the same problem with USB keys. This problem has been happening since I bought the computer with both USB ports. Can you help me?

Many aspects of the problem lead me to think it is a software problem
